MOST SANCTIONED COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD



Amidst the Russia-Ukraine War, Russia has become the most sanctioned country in the world, as per the findings of sanctions tracking database of castellum.ai.

Earlier, Iran was by far the most sanctioned country in the world with around 3616 sanctions from the US, the UK and the UN etc.

Lets find out which countries are the most sanctioned-

RUSSIA


After the Russian military aggression in Ukraine, Russia currently has 6366 sanctions imposed by USA, United Kingdom, Australia, European Union (EU), Japan, Switzerland and France.

IRAN


Sanctions were imposed on Iran by the USA, United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) in response to Iran's controversial nuclear advancements and financing of terrorist organisations.

SYRIA


Due to repression of civilians in  Syrian Civil War after 2011 and its involvement in sponsoring terrorist groups, Syria so far has 2608 active sanctions imposed on it by the US, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, Arab League.

NORTH KOREA


Kim-Jong-Un led North Korea is fourth in the list with 2,077 sanctions imposed on it due to its nuclear and ballistic missile programme. Apart from this, cyber attacks, money laundering and human rights violations have been major reasons for the imposition of certain sanctions by the US, EU, UN, South Korea, Australia and Japan.


VENEZUELA


Human rights violation, economic crisis, anti democratic actions and corruption of the authoritarian regime of Nicholas Maduro has been the reasons for imposition of sanctions on Venezuela by the US, EU, Panama Mexico and Switzerland.


MAYANMAR


It has 519 sanctions imposed on it by US, EU, UK, Australia and Canada in response to military Junta's violent suppression of pro-democracy movements, human rights violation and corruption.


CUBA


Cuba has been under US sanctions since 60 years due to its political alignment towards Soviet Union. Cuba has a total of 208 sanctions placed on it.
