Droupadi Murmu, former Jharkhand Governor is set to be elected as the next President, the first tribal woman to occupy the highest post in the country.
Ruling NDA's Droupadi Murmu is contesting against Opposition's Yashwant Sinha in the presidential election, with votes stacked in favour of Murmu, who will be the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post in the country.
From Junior Assistant To Presidential Candidate
Draupadi Murmu's journey from a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department of Odisha to the presidential candidate of the BJP-led NDA has been long and difficult.
She is a member of the Scheduled Tribe. She belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party. She is the first governor of Jharkhand to serve the full five-year term (2015-2021) since the state was formed in 2000.

Murmu, who was born in the Santhal community, started her political career as a councillor in Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 1997 and climbed the ranks to become an Odisha government minister in 2000 and the Governor of Jharkhand in 2015.
Droupadi Murmu, a two-term Rairangpur MLA, retained her assembly seat in 2009 after the BJD severed ties with the BJP weeks before the state elections, which were won by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Droupadi Murmu, who was born on June 20, 1958, is also the first female Governor of Jharkhand. Murmu will also be the first president born after independence if elected.
Draupadi Murmu took her first steps out of poverty in one of the country's most remote and underdeveloped districts. Despite all odds, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramadevi Women's College in Bhubaneswar and worked as a junior assistant in the Odisha government's irrigation and power department.
She later worked as an honorary assistant teacher at Rairangpur's Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre. The Odisha Legislative Assembly presented Murmu with the Nilkanth Award for Best MLA of the Year in 2007.
Murmu has extensive administrative experience, having worked in the Odisha government in ministries such as transportation, commerce, fisheries, and animal husbandry. Murmu was the vice president of the BJP in Odisha and later the president of the Scheduled Tribe Morcha.
She was elected district president of the BJP's Mayurbhanj (West) unit in 2010 and re-elected in 2013. The same year, she was elected to the BJP National Executive (ST Morcha).
Droupadi Murmu served as district president until April 2015, when she was appointed Governor of Jharkhand. Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, with whom he had two sons and a daughter. Her life has been marked by personal tragedies, including the deaths of her husband and two sons.
