Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot during a speech at an election campaign event on Friday, seriously injuring him. According to officials, Abe, 67, was airlifted to a hospital but died during treatment. The assassination of Japan's former Prime Minister shocked the entire world. The suspect who opened fire on Shinzo Abe at the scene has been apprehended by police. Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, has been identified as the attacker.
Yamagami is said to be a Nara resident, according to local media reports. Yamagami, according to NHK, was dissatisfied with Shinzo Abe and wanted to kill him. Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, is a former Marine Self-Defense Force soldier, according to a Fuji TV report.
During interrogation, the 41-year-old shooter who was apprehended shortly after the attack revealed that he was dissatisfied with Abe's method of operation. "He (Tetsuyo Yamagami) was 'dissatisfied' with the former prime minister and planned to murder him," police officials told NHK.
According to an eyewitness to the attack, the assailant did not attempt to flee after shooting at Shinzo Abe. When security personnel apprehended Abe, he put down the gun and remained on the spot. A self-modified gun was used in the attack on Abe. The police had previously described it as a shotgun.
At the same time, Japan's Chief Cabinet Minister Hirokazu Matsuno stated on the incident of the deadly attack on Shinzo Abe that such a barbaric act, whatever the reason, is completely unforgivable... and we strongly oppose it. Shinzo Abe died in hospital while receiving treatment. Shinzo Abe suffered from heart failure, and parts of his body stopped working. The Prime Minister of India has expressed condolences on the death of the 67-year-old former Prime Minister of Japan and has declared a day of national mourning on July 9, 2022.
